What Exactly Is Flannelette?

Flannelette is a brushed cotton fabric that’s soft to the touch and designed to trap warmth. It’s different from flannel (traditionally made from wool), and is commonly used in winter pyjamas, nighties, and bed linens.

The softness comes from a special brushing process. After weaving, the surface of the cotton is brushed with fine metal tools to lift the fibres, creating a fuzzy texture that traps warm air. This makes the fabric both insulating and breathable—ideal for sleepwear that keeps you warm without overheating.

 

How Is Flannelette Made?

• Weave: Flannelette is typically woven in a plain or twill weave, where warp and weft yarns cross at right angles.
• Brushing: The fabric is brushed on one or both sides to create a soft nap. This process creates tiny air pockets that help retain body heat while remaining breathable.
• Material: Premium flannelette is made from thicker yarns and features a tighter weave, which enhances both softness and durability.

 

Cotton vs Bamboo Flannelette

Cotton flannelette is known for being breathable, durable, and getting softer over time. While bamboo flannelette is also soft and moisture-wicking, it can be more prone to wrinkling and pilling. Many customers find that bamboo loses its fuzzy texture after washing, which isn’t ideal for long-lasting sleepwear.

The best fabric depends on what you prioritise—long-term durability or initial softness.

 

What Makes a High-Quality Flannelette Pyjama?

It’s easy to assume that the softest fabric in the store is the best, but softness alone can be misleading. Here’s what to look for instead:

1. Durability

The ideal flannelette is brushed just enough to feel cosy. It should withstand multiple washes without losing its softness, colour, or shape. Over-brushed fabrics may feel soft initially but are more likely to pill, wear out quickly, or feel rough over time.

Tip: If your flannelette pyjamas start to look fuzzy or pill after one wash, the fabric was likely over-brushed or made with loose fibres.

2. Weight and Thickness

Weight is a key indicator of quality. A higher GSM (grams per square metre) means more yarn, better insulation, and a more structured finish. Look for flannelette that weighs at least 155 GSM. Ours goes up to 175 GSM, offering enhanced warmth and a thicker, more comforting drape—perfect for colder nights.

3. Weave Density and Yarn Quality

Common flannelette fabrics are made using a 40x42 yarn count (warp x weft) with 20s x 10s yarn thickness. Our flannelette fabric uses 20% thicker yarns and increases weave density by 30%, resulting in a tighter, stronger weave that offers better insulation and a more luxurious texture.

4. Yarn-Dyed vs Piece-Dyed

Yarn-dyed flannelette—where the yarn is dyed before weaving—produces more vibrant, fade-resistant colours and longer-lasting fabric. It also feels more refined and premium compared to piece-dyed fabric (dyed after weaving).

This is why yarn-dyed flannelette tends to be our preferred choice—it balances visual richness with better longevity.

5. Weave Tightness

Try this next time you shop: hold the fabric up to a light. A high-quality, tightly woven flannelette will let less light through. Looser weaves are easier to tear, shrink, or wear thin with regular use.
